How Much Water You Need

How Much Water You Need

It is suggested that you should drink at least 8, 8 ounce portions of water per day.  In this post I will discuss why this is so important.

The human body is made up of over 75% water and it is impossible to exist without water.  If we were deprived of water we could only survive for a total of three days.  In today’s world the intake of water has been replaced by sugary soda and sweetened sports drinks.  When it is all said and done, water is a healthier choice for your overall health and fitness.

How much water do you need in a day?  It can vary greatly depending on the amount you exercise, your weight and the temperature.  Research has proven that over 2/3 of all adults do not get the amount of water they need on a daily basis.   Consistent consumption of water will replenish your body and keep it well hydrated and functioning as it should.

Too many of us wait until we are thirsty before we grab a drink of water.  Thirst isn’t a reliable method for determining the water needs for the body.  By the time you are experiencing thirst you have already lost two or more cups of the body’s water supply.  Therefore, you need to consistently put water into your system throughout the day to avoid the feeling of thirst.

It is very important that you don’t substitute drinks with alcohol and caffeine for water.  The reason behind this is that those types of beverages act as a diuretic and can cause you to lose more water through increased urination.   You may think and feel as if you are getting enough hydration from these drinks, but the truth is you are losing your hydration almost as fast as you consume it.

When you need to drink water.

When your exercise-When you add exercise to the mix, you need even more water to be healthy.  As you exercise you perspire and more of your valuable water supply is deplenished.  For each pound lost due to exercise, you need to drink two cups of water.

Before you go to sleep-  When you lay down to sleep, your body loses water.  By drinking a glass or more before you go to sleep, you can wake up with your body functioning at an optimal level.

When you are sick- Obviously when you are sick you will need more water than the times your body is experiencing perfect health.  When you get a cold or flu like symptoms, your body can become dehydrated very quickly.  The simple solution is to drink more water to help your body recover quicker and stay hydrated.

In conclusion, drinking more water will increase your health and ability to function at your best.  Always make it a habit to drink  water throughout the day.  Keep a refreshing bottle of water with you and continually drink from it consistently.  Get rid of the caffeine and get more of the H2O.
